Articles
The Living Sober Network regularly publishes a series of addiction related articles for dissemination through our website. These articles are created for addicts, their families, student researchers and anyone else looking for more information about recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
What is addiction and why did my friend or loved one become addicted?
Addiction is a chronic disease characterized by compulsive substance-seeking behavior and substance abuse. Addiction produces lasting chemical changes in the brain and strong physiological or psychological dependence often beyond voluntary control. Addiction has many causes, but they all come down to the "reward center" of the brain. Your friend or loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol because it feels good (or used to feel good).
How does my friend or loved one get treatment for his or her addiction?
The first step is getting your friend or loved one into a treatment program, whether it be inpatient, outpatient, extended care, sober living or even individual psychotherapy sessions. The most important thing is to act - immediately. Addiction is characterized by frequent relapse, so the sooner you start the recovery process, the better.
